Multi-figure oil painting depicting the assassination of Ioannis Capodistrias
On the September 27/October 9, Ioannis Capodistrias, Governor of Greece, was assassinated by his political rivals on the steps of the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon in Nafplio. In the early 1870s, the Corfiot painter Charalambos Pachis composed the incident of the assassination in two paintings. One painting – composed in 1872 – was donated to Capodistrias Museum by Erasmia Panteliou and is on permanent display in the hall “Capodistrias and the Greek State”.
... The painting The Assassination of Ioannis Capodistrias does not constitute a realistic representation of the event, given that Charalambos Pachis paints an allegorical version of the theme of the assassination, illustrating both the incident itself and its impact on the people of the Ionian Islands at the time. The painter not only placed the assassination inside the church, but also chose to add a number of other human figures who weren’t necessarily present during the incident. We notice several major characters among them, such as Theodoros Kolokotronis, Andreas Moustoxydis, Petrobey Mavromichalis and others. Through his painting, the painter provides a narration of and a commentary on the assassination of the First Governor of the newly founded Greek state.
